Fifty Plus Magazine

Fifty Plus, the magazine of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons, is published twice a year and distributed free of charge to all 24,000 BARP members and is also available for purchase in bookstores and other retail outlets. It is designed to appeal to all persons aged 50 and over in Barbados and beyond.

As BARP continues to grow in size and stature, we recognise our increasing responsibility as advocate  for one of the most significant sectors of the population, so the magazine  addresses the wider community. You will find, therefore, a variety of relevant features and articles on health and well being, lifestyle and leisure, consumer affairs, financial advice, travel, cookery, nostalgia, books and much, much, more. There is something in this magazine for everyone.

Our intention is that Fifty Plus will inform, educate and entertain, as well as enable BARP members to keep in touch with the Association's news, views and activities.

Packed with informative and entertaining features and articles, the Winter 2010 issue of the BARP Magazine Fifty Plus is now on its way to members courtesy of our friends at Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited who have sponsored the cost of packaging and posting yet again!

This Special Anniversary Issue commemorates BARP's 15th anniversary and the cover highlights some of the areas where BARP has made tremendous strides. Ian Archer, one of the Association's founding members and past President, recalls how the association was started and the goals achieved.

The magazine also includes articles on how to reduce your salt intake and hypertension risks; a fascinating look at how mentoring contributed to late Prime Minister's ascent to the highest office in Barbados; an interview with a Barbadian who fought in the Vietnam war and lived to tell the tale; the health benefits of participating in social events; 15 great ways to save a dollar; crime prevention tips from the Royal Barbados Police Force; easy preventive steps towards a healthier and safer life; an update on how BARP is helping to bring reverse mortgages to Barbados.

All the regular features are there too, like Afternoons Out, Caribbean Island Getaways, From Kitchen to Table, On the Bookshelf, Money Matters, and of course there is the BARP News & Events, packed with all that has been happening since the last issue, including the 15th anniversary activities.

As BARP members will know, the magazine is free, but for non-members, copies are available priced just $10 from the BARP office, Days Bookstore in Independence Square and Cloister Bookstore at Sheraton Mall.  Starting with the Summer 2010 issue, Fifty Plus is also available in full on the internet courtesy of the daily online newspaper Barbados Today. Utilising their impressive ’Pagesuite’ technology, the Barbados Today platform at http://www.barbadostoday.bb enables readers with internet access anywhere in the world to read, download and share Fifty Plus magazine with friends, family and colleagues.
