The Barbados Association of Retired Persons is pleased to announce the launch of the BARP Senior Citizens Awards, which will be presented on an annual basis to people over the age of 50 whose contribution to the community and to the country may not otherwise have been adequately recognised.
The intention is to highlight some of the many ‘unsung heroes’ in our midst.
There will be a number of awards presented in a wide range of categories including the BARP Senior Citizens Award for Outstanding Achievement in community work, education, elderly care, charity work and many other areas of relevance.
We therefore invite BARP members, and members of the public, to write to BARP at Collymore Rock, St. Michael BB14004, nominating persons for consideration. You are required to provide the name and address of the nominee, together with a clear and thorough description of why you feel the person you are nominating deserves a BARP Senior Citizens Award. You must include as much detail as possible about the person’s contribution to the community or to society as a whole and describe the work they do or have done. All nominations must be accompanied by the full name, address and telephone number of the person making the nomination. Nominations meeting the above criteria may also be emailed to

. We may be unable to follow up on any nominations made which do not include all the information requested above.
A panel of judges will be appointed and BARP members will also be given the opportunity to vote for the shortlisted nominees in certain categories. A variety of factors will come into play in the decision to make an award, including, but not limited to the number of nominations received for each person.
BARP will also have in its gift at least one special award, to be known as the BARP Senior Citizens Lifetime Achievement Award which will be made to an individual who, in the opinion of the Association, has made outstanding contributions to society.
As 2010 marks the 15th Anniversary of BARP, these inaugural Awards will co-incide with that important landmark for the Association. It is also intended that the awards will be tied in with the 2010 Elders Appreciation Day Event which was such an outstanding success in 2009.
